Dancelessons with Marika

For you with two left feet and other beginners

Book a dancelesson

Booking of dance lessons is done via the contact form or by emailing dancelessons[at]lagervall.se. Unfortunately, it sometimes happens that emails end up in the spam folder, so please feel free to get in touch again or send me a text message if you do not receive a reply within 1-2 days. The phone number can be found on the contact page.

Before you book

Before you book your first lesson, there are a few things that are good to think through and that I need to know in order to give you the best possible lesson; see further below. If you find it difficult to choose, for example, the type of waltz, or between foxtrot and waltz, I can show you more when we meet, so not everything needs to be decided in advance.

Please note that I do not give lessons to individuals. If you don't have a partner – bring a friend!

  • Which dance would you like to learn? Read more about the dances I teach here (in Swedish).
  • Do you have any previous experience in dance (regardless of the style)?
  • Are you getting married, attending a ball, or do you just want to learn for fun?
  • If you want to learn the waltz – which kind of waltz would you like to learn? Read more about the differences on the waltz page (in Swedish). If you cannot decide, we can settle it at the start of the lesson.
  • Do you have any specific requests regarding what you want to learn? I do not teach choreographies, beyond the intro and outro of the dance, but if you have your own ideas, I am happy to help you practice them. Read more about tips and ideas on the page about the dances (in Swedish).
  • Do you already have a specific song you want to dance to? I recommend that you wait until after the (first) lesson before choosing a song definitively, but if you have a song you want and it works for dancing, I can adapt the lesson to it. In that case, I need to know which song it is a couple of days before the lesson.
  • What are your ambitions for the dance? Do you just want to take one lesson and manage a lap around the floor at your wedding, do you truly want to learn the dance, or is it most important to impress the audience as much as possible?
  • Would you like to come to me for the lesson, or do you have another venue that suits you better? See prices and travel expenses on the prices page. If you are unsure if your space is sufficient, a rule of thumb is that 8-10 square metres is plenty for the basics of most dances. If you have less space than that, a solution can almost always be found, but keep in mind that you will then have to stick to fairly slow music (the faster the music, the more space is required).
  • If you are learning for a specific occasion, how much time do you have for practice until then? Do you want to take several lessons?

Right of withdrawal and cancellation

  • Once you have booked a lesson, you have the right to change your mind or cancel at any time up until the start of the lesson. Lessons are always paid for afterwards and there is no fee for late cancellation. However, travel expenses may still apply if I have already started the journey to you or the venue you have arranged at the time of cancellation.
  • If you hire a venue for the lesson, you are responsible for all costs and arrangements concerning the venue, even if you cancel the lesson late. If, however, I am forced to cancel the lesson at such short notice that the venue cannot be rebooked or cancelled, I will cover the venue fee upon presentation of an invoice/receipt from the individuals or company you hired the venue from. For this to apply, I need to be informed in advance of the terms that apply to the venue, and I must approve that it is a reasonable cost before the booking is made.
  • Regarding the processing of personal data, please see my privacy policy in the footer.

Before the first lesson

In addition to knowing what you want to learn, there are a few more things to keep in mind before the first lesson:

  • Shoes: If you come to me, you can dance barefoot, in socks, or in clean indoor shoes (that do not leave marks on parquet floors). Regardless, it is good if you both do the same, so that a person with shoes does not accidentally step on someone dancing barefoot. For the same reason, it is wise to avoid open-toed shoes, such as sandals. If you have bought nice shoes for the wedding, you are welcome to dance in them, but wait until the end of the lesson so you don't get blisters. It is also good to learn the basics without having to handle unfamiliar shoes or higher heels than you are used to. If we dance in a venue you have arranged, we will adapt to the rules of that venue. Another thing to consider is that the shoes should neither be too slippery nor have too much grip on regular floors, so that the shoes do not prevent you from dancing the way you want.
  • Clothing: Regular everyday clothes are perfectly fine to dance in. Just keep in mind that you should be able to move freely (so very narrow skirts are not ideal) and that you may get warm while dancing.
  • Venue: If you are learning to dance for a specific occasion, such as a wedding, it is also worth considering the venue you will be dancing in; partly because a slippery or rough surface affects the dance, and partly because the space you have to dance in sets limits for both how much is worth learning and how fast the music can be. A simple rule of thumb is that the faster the music, the larger the venue needed. See more about music on the music pages (In Swedish).
  • Music: I have plenty of dance music on my computer (including all the music linked from this website) and will bring a selection if I come to you for the lesson. There are also a lot of examples of different kinds of dance music in the lists for the different dances under the music page (In Swedish). If you are learning to dance for your wedding, I recommend waiting to choose a song until after the (first) lesson. That way, you can choose a song that you find easy to dance to, rather than a song you like but which is difficult to dance to and requires more practice. If you still have a song you want to use – send it to me before the lesson and I will check if it works and how easy it is. I am always looking for tips on new good waltzes, so if you have a song you want to use, feel free to send it to me even if you don't want to take a lesson; I'll check how well the song works and get back to you. Please note that I do not teach waltz to music that is not in waltz time (read more about waltz time (In Swedish) here); see also my answer to that question on the FAQ page (In Swedish).

Directions

If you are coming to me for the lesson:

  • Address: Trombongatan 18B, Västra Frölunda. It is right behind Frölunda Kulturhus in Gothenburg.
  • If you are using public transport: The nearest stops are Positivgatan and Frölunda Torg. From there, it takes 7-12 minutes to walk to my place. Please check a map beforehand if you are unsure of the way.
  • If you are coming by car: If you arrive by car, it is easiest to use GPS to find the way. Access to the area is via Valthornsgatan and past the back of the Kulturhus.
  • Parking: There are free guest parking spaces here and there along the street, marked "Endast besökare" (Visitors only). The nearest ones are outside no. 15 and between no. 14 and 16. Others are located outside no. 7, among other places. Call me if you have difficulty finding one and I can guide you.
  • The house: There are only two flats in building no. 18 and I live in the top one (external staircase, no code).

After the dance lesson

After the lesson, please let me know if you have any questions or problems during the training, or if you need more help with music tips, and I will help to the best of my ability.

You are also very welcome to leave a review here. If you have ideas on how I can improve the teaching and the website, please leave them here as well, or send them to me by e-mail. If you use the form, you can be anonymous if you want. The comments you submit there may be posted on the start page, so keep that in mind if you want to sign with your name.

Digital dance aid

If you need a little more help, but don't want, can't or have time to take another lesson, I also offer some digital aid, some of which is available for free directly on the website. This includes the music search tool, beat training for waltz, playlists on YouTube/Spotify and a whole page with tips for you who don't have the possibility or the time to take a lesson or who need a bit more help with the basics.

In addition, I also offer a service where you can send me a 1-2 minute video clip and receive back a review of how your dance looks with tips for improvements. Here I look at things such as: the overall impression (e.g. if you look stiff), dance posture, posture, foot technique in the steps (e.g. that you take the steps correctly and do not collide), variation in the dance, and how well the dance matches the music. The easiest way is for you to upload a video of your dance on a cloud service and send me the link, so I can look at it and get back to you with an opinion. Since this takes some time, I need to charge a little, see the prices page for a current price list.

Is there any interest in taking a whole lesson via video? Here I'm thinking via e.g. Zoom or GoogleMeet, where you dance in front of a webcam and I can see what you are doing in real time and help you with improvements. This is best suited for couples who have already taken a lesson and just want to get some fine-tuning of the dance, but if there is interest it can certainly be developed. Get in touch if you are interested and we will see what can be done!
